About tecWAVE

Judith Scott is the Principal Investigator for the tecWAVE project (Teaching with Computers: Word Annotations for Vocabulary Education). Dr. Scott, an Associate Professor of Education, specializing in language and literacy, is a noted a vocabulary researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Yi Zhang is the Co-Principal Investigator on the tecWAVE project. Dr. Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Engineering with an expertise in Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, Applied Machine Learning, and Data Mining.

Path Star is the tecWAVE Educational Technology Research Grant Manager. Path provides support to the Principal Investigators in preparation for presentations, conferences, and workshops, disseminates information and acts as contact person for UCSC, and the public. Path also provides overall fiscal management and coordination for the project.

Kelly Stack works on use case analyses, testing strategies and test plans, and graphical user interface solutions. Kelly is a Faculty Support Specialist at the UCSC Instructional Technology Center bringing a doctorate in Linguistics and over ten years experience in instructional management to the team.

Ondine Gage-Serio a third year doctoral student in Education, serves as a Graduate Research Assistant who provides a bridge between Education and Computer Science. She comes to the team with an MA in Linguistics and nineteen years of teaching experience in both face-to-face and online instruction.

Chuck Greer is the Technical Project Manager for tecWAVE bringing over 10 years hands-on project management experience to the team. Chuck has expertise in developing large web applications in the private sector and enhanced those skills with a variety of infrastructure related projects at UC Santa Cruz.

Jim Snook is the lead project engineer for tecWAVE bringing over 25 years of software engineering experience, database design, Java client-server and data driven server based applications along with programming automation and controls software. As team leader, Jim has significant education and experience in computer science, software engineering and programming as well as project engineering and engineering management.

Jiazhong Nie a first year doctoral student in Computer Science under Dr. Yi Zhang, comes to tecWAVE with an expertise in natural language processing. His contribution to the team will be to create an annotation parser and tokenizer which will provide multilingual definitions for words in context.

Min Li is a visiting Masters of Software Engineering student from Nanjing University, China. Min holds many awards from Nanjing and programming awards from across China. Additionally, Min’s work experience as a software developer and designer for the past 7 years allows Min to assist in many development capacities for the tecWAVE project.

Xing Xing a graduate student in Computer Science under Dr. Yi Zhang, comes to the tecWAVE team with a specialty in information retrieval and data mining. Xing’s contribution will be to provide Contextual Image Retrieval and Word Sense Disambiguation for the tecWAVE application.

Ethan Zhang a third year doctoral student in Computer Science under Dr. Yi Zhang, comes to the tecWAVE team with a specialty in information retrieval and data mining. Xing’s contribution will be to provide Contextual Image Retrieval and Word Sense Disambiguation for the tecWAVE application.
